The Giant's Causeway is situated two miles from the heritage village of Bushmills, and lies in what was the outer border of the ancient kingdom of Dalriada. Approximately four miles away is Whitepark Bay where man first settled this island after the last ice age, his migration along the coast eventually led to the discovery of the causeway and the beginning of many of the myths and legends of Ireland including Finn MacCool.
Documented accounts tribute the discovery of the Giant's Causeway to the Bishop of Derry who is said to have visited here in 1692 and took word of its unique appearance back to the learned circles in Dublin. The Causeway Stones have been visited by kings, queens, presidents and a whole range of famous people including the millions of travellers from around the world who come to see this unique geological occurence.
There was once two hotels which accommodated visitors at the site, today only the Causeway Hotel remains but there are lots of bed and breakfast accommodations around the area including a four star hotel in Bushmills. Best time to visit in my opinion is May, just before the peak season of July and August or indeed if you dont mind the weather, a late autumn or winter visit can give you this wonderful site with very few people around it.
